Police also confiscated 104 tickets that were fakes or being sold on black market.

Police officers took positions outside the stadium. They soon saw some men selling tickets in black. They arrested three suspects: Tarun Kumar, Md Naim, and Piyush. “We recovered 24 tickets from them. They were selling tickets for a total of $24 million. 1,250 4,000 to people desperate to enter the stadium,” said deputy commissioner of police (central) Sanjay Kumar Sain.

They were all booked under the Delhi Prevention of Touting, Malpractices against Tourism Ordinance.

Rohit Chauhan, another suspect in the ticket-selling scandal, was also arrested by police. Chauhan’s tickets did not stand the scrutiny of online checking, said police. “On minute examination, these tickets were found forged,” the DCP said, adding that four more suspects, including Chauhan’s three minor associates – all from Mumbai – were nabbed and a colour printer and other materials used for printing fake tickets recovered from them.

According to the officer, this gang would travel from one city in India to another during the IPL season to print fake tickets and sell them to desperate cricket enthusiasts. Police said that the fake tickets looked similar to the original tickets and that 80 of these tickets had been seized.

“Since original tickets have barcodes printed on them, we are probing how the fraudsters managed to help their ticket buyers gain access to the stadium,” said another police officer, asking not be named.

According to the police, the second gang has been arrested for forgery.
